Rema set to headline the FIFA World Cup 2026 Opening Ceremony and Nigeria couldn’t be prouder

There are moments that stop you mid-scroll and make you smile and the news that broke on Saturday morning was one of them. Nigeria’s own Divine Ikubor, better known to the world simply as Rema, has been officially confirmed as a headline performer for the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The stage? Los Angeles. The date? 12 June 2026. The occasion? The biggest football tournament in history.

FIFA made the announcement through its official channels, and within minutes, the internet did what it does best, it erupted. For Nigerian football fans, Afrobeats lovers, and anyone who has ever bopped their head to ‘Calm Down’, this was a moment worth savouring.

A Stage Like No Other

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already making history before a single ball is kicked. For the first time in 96 years of the tournament’s existence, FIFA is holding not one but three separate opening ceremonies – one in each host nation. Mexico City’s iconic Estadio Azteca gets the party started on 11 June, while Toronto and Los Angeles follow on 12 June. It is a bold, unprecedented move that reflects just how vast and ambitious this edition of the World Cup truly is.

The Los Angeles ceremony sitting as the centrepiece of the three will take place at SoFi Stadium and is being produced in partnership with Balich Wonder Studio, the company behind some of the world’s most spectacular large-scale productions. Fans are encouraged to arrive early, with the pre-match entertainment beginning 90 minutes before kickoff: a grand spectacle featuring live performances, immersive storytelling, and breathtaking large-scale visuals centred around the FIFA World Cup Trophy.

“This opening ceremony in Los Angeles represents the extraordinary scale of what the FIFA World Cup 2026 will become.” — Gianni Infantino, FIFA President

The Lineup That Has Everyone Talking

Rema will share the Los Angeles stage with a truly dazzling cast of global talent:

  • Rema  —  Nigeria’s Afrobeat Rave Lorde himself
  • Tyla  —  South Africa’s Grammy-winning superstar, who also performs at the Mexico City ceremony
  • Katy Perry  —  American pop royalty, who confirmed her slot with characteristic wit on Instagram
  • Future  —  Atlanta’s rap titan
  • Anitta  —  Brazil’s unstoppable queen of funk and pop
  • LISA  —  BLACKPINK’s Thai superstar, representing the global reach of K-pop

The lineup is nothing short of extraordinary and can be named a six-continent conversation happening all at once, united by music and football. FIFA President Gianni Infantino described it as a reflection of ‘the cultural diversity of the United States and the unifying power of music.’ It is hard to argue with that.

The Anthem, the Anthem, the Anthem

If the performer list wasn’t exciting enough, FIFA has also confirmed that the official World Cup anthem titled ‘Dai Dai’. ‘Dai Dai’ is a collaboration between none other than Burna Boy and Colombian legend Shakira. The track is set to debut on 14 May 2026 and is widely tipped to become the most-streamed World Cup song in history. Between Rema on the stage and Burna Boy on the airwaves, Nigerian music is not just participating in this World Cup but helping to define it.

Carrying the Torch

Rema’s confirmation is the latest chapter in a proud story of Nigerian artists lighting up football’s biggest stages. D’Banj set the tone at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa with the unforgettable ‘Wavin’ Flag’. Davido made history at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Yemi Alade, Kizz Daniel, Patoranking, and Burna Boy have all performed at major UEFA and CAF tournaments. Each appearance has pushed the door a little wider.

Now Rema; the young man from Benin City, Edo State, who signed his first record deal at the age of 18 and went on to create one of the most-streamed African songs of all time, steps through that door and onto football’s grandest stage. It is the kind of story that reminds you why you love music.

“Now, Rema and Tyla are carrying that torch even further by transitioning from closing-ceremony highlights to headlining the primary opening spectacle for the largest World Cup in history.”

A Tournament of Firsts

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is a tournament built on superlatives. It will feature a record 104 matches, played across 16 host cities in three countries. The opening match kicks off in Mexico City on 11 June 2026, with the final at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey on 19 July. Adding to its landmark nature, FIFA has announced a ‘Super Bowl-style’ halftime show for the final, developed in partnership with Global Citizen. The world is watching, and the world is excited.

And somewhere in the middle of all that on a warm Los Angeles evening on 12 June Rema will walk out onto the SoFi Stadium stage, look out at billions of viewers around the globe, and do what he was born to do.

Nigeria, the whole continent, will be singing along.
