Former President Goodluck Jonathan has bid farewell to former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma, who is returning to his country after spending more than two years in Nigeria.
Jonathan announced this in a statement on Sunday, referring to Koroma as his “dear friend and brother.”
He said Nigeria had been a “home away from home” for Koroma throughout his stay, and expressed appreciation for the chance to extend friendship, support and solidarity to the former Sierra Leonean leader.
Jonathan further revealed that he, along with others, had worked quietly behind the scenes to encourage dialogue with Sierra Leonean authorities in order to pave the way for Koroma’s safe and dignified return.
“As we say farewell today, I am particularly happy that he is returning home to Freetown,” Jonathan said.
He wished Koroma a safe trip and peace of mind as he embarks on what he called a new chapter in his life.
“May your return be a moment of renewed hope and reconciliation for you, your family and the people of Sierra Leone,” Jonathan added.
“Safe travels, my brother. Sierra Leone welcomes you home,” the former Nigerian leader said.
