The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, has inducted 32 pioneer graduates of Prosthetics and Orthotics (P&O), becoming the first state university in Nigeria to offer the programme.
The induction ceremony, held at the Oladipo Akinkugbe Hall on the university’s Laje Campus, marked a significant milestone in Nigeria’s medical rehabilitation sector. The university said the programme would help reduce the country’s dependence on foreign-trained specialists while addressing the increasing demand for mobility and rehabilitation services.
Speaking at the event, the Dean of the Faculty of Medical Rehabilitation, Prof. Owolawi, described the induction as a major achievement for both the institution and the healthcare sector. He said the graduates had been equipped with the knowledge and practical skills needed to restore mobility, confidence, and dignity to people living with limb loss and other mobility challenges.
The Vice Chancellor of UNIMED, Prof. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Patrick Osho, urged the new professionals to remain committed to ethical practice and professionalism. She emphasised that the field demands high standards of competence, integrity, and empathy, adding that the profession is fundamentally rooted in service and restoration.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Registrar of the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria (MRTB), Prof. Rufai Yusuf Ahmad, praised UNIMED for pioneering comprehensive rehabilitation training in the country. He noted that the university had created a platform where all medical rehabilitation programmes could thrive together, a development he said would strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide.
Delivering the induction lecture, Dr. Kingsley Onwukamuche encouraged the graduates to uphold integrity, compassion, and excellence in their careers. He stressed that the profession provides hope and renewed dignity for persons with disabilities and urged the inductees to advocate for inclusive healthcare policies while helping to bridge critical gaps in Nigeria’s rehabilitation system.
