The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who passed away while being held captive by bandits, in what officials have described as a tragic loss to the state and the nation.

The announcement was made on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu, in a statement issued to journalists.

According to the government, the retired military officer succumbed to complications from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity. Officials said multiple efforts by the state government and security agencies to secure his release proved unsuccessful.

“The Katsina State Government, with a heavy heart and deep sense of loss, wishes to inform the general public of the tragic passing of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar,” the statement read, adding that despite relentless and concerted efforts by relevant authorities, “the situation ended in this tragedy.”

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the incident as a “dark moment,” stressing that it underscored the urgent need for a stronger and more coordinated response to the security crisis gripping the region. He extended his condolences to the General’s family and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating banditry.

“The Katsina State Government remains committed to working with the Federal Government and security forces to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice,” the statement said. “Our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken.”

Abubakar was abducted alongside his wife on May 30 while travelling through Katsina State. Reports emerged last week that his captors had demanded the release of three detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during security operations as conditions for the couple’s freedom.

His death has renewed calls for intensified government action against armed banditry, which continues to pose a severe threat to lives and security across Nigeria’s northwest.
