Super Falcons coach Augustine Eguavoen has suggested that goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie could be deployed as a centre-back, citing her technical ability and versatility during training.
Eguavoen disclosed after Nigeria defeated Comoros 2-0 in the first leg of their second-round fixture in the 2028 Olympic qualifiers in Ikenne-Remo on Friday.
Michelle Alozie opened the scoring three minutes into the second half before Uchenna Kanu added Nigeria’s second goal with a header in the 60th minute.
The victory came as Nigeria continues to address defensive challenges following the unavailability of Oluwatosin Demehin and Osinachi Ohale’s retirement from international football.
In response, Eguavoen deployed midfielder Christy Ucheibe in central defence, despite the position not being her regular role for the national team.
Asked whether Ucheibe would continue in that position, the coach emphasised the importance of having players who can perform effectively in multiple roles.
He explained that Demehin’s absence and Ohale’s decision to retire had required adjustments to the team’s defensive arrangement.
According to Eguavoen, he had tried to persuade Ohale to reconsider her retirement but ultimately respected her decision.
The coach also praised Ucheibe’s adaptability, describing versatility as an advantage for a team competing at the highest level.
He subsequently identified Nnadozie as another player who could potentially fill a defensive role, pointing to her technical proficiency on the ball during training sessions.
“She (Nnadozie) is capable of playing centre-back. Observing her technical proficiency with the ball throughout our training sessions demonstrates this capability,” Eguavoen said.
However, his comments indicate a potential tactical option rather than confirmation that Nnadozie will be moved from goal to central defence.
Nigeria will look to build on the first-leg advantage as the Super Falcons continue their campaign to qualify for the 2028 Olympic Games.
