Cristiano Ronaldo has been banned for 30 days by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and fined €255 after he left a Portugal training camp last month.
The FPF disciplinary committee ruled that part of the ban has already been served, since he was already suspended. The Al-Nassr forward began his punishment on 1 October, which leaves 11 days to run. If that holds, he would be free to play in Portugal’s upcoming games against Denmark on 14 November and Wales on 17 November.
What happened
According to the ruling, Ronaldo walked out of the camp on 30 September before a training session at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen. He reportedly did not tell the FPF or his teammates beforehand. The document says he phoned FPF president Pedro Proença and said he was not in the right frame of mind to play, and that he “was not in an emotional condition to remain with the National Team at the training camp.”
Mitigating factors
Ronaldo asked the committee to consider mitigating circumstances, including a clean disciplinary record in the current season and the previous three, his services to football, commendations for sporting merit and his contribution to establishing the facts. The ruling says he submitted his sporting CV, with his awards and recognitions, and pointed to a statement he published on Instagram on 6 October.
The committee accepted his services to football and his many honours. It also took account of his conduct afterwards, in particular “the remorse shown in the statement of 06.10.2026.”
Aggravating factors
The committee also found aggravating factors: the media attention the case attracted and his position as team captain.
