Marli Salmon has put pen to paper on his first professional deal with Arsenal, though the young defender’s long-term future at the club may still involve a temporary switch elsewhere.
The club announced the news on Saturday, which coincided with Salmon turning 17. The centre-back, who can also cover at right-back, described the moment as the product of sustained effort and setbacks, saying he felt proud of reaching this point and was eager to build on a strong start to the year ahead.
Last season, Salmon featured four times for the first team, including a start in the FA Cup victory over Mansfield, though a Premier League debut has so far eluded him. He has since been training regularly with Mikel Arteta’s senior squad and drew praise for his displays throughout pre-season.
Given ongoing injury absences for William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, some had hoped Salmon might see more first-team action this campaign. However, he was left out of the squad for both of Arsenal’s opening league fixtures, and his path to minutes looks even harder now that Ezri Konsa has joined from Aston Villa in a £55 million deal.
That has fuelled speculation about a possible loan exit – an option that only became available once Salmon turned 17 and signed his professional terms. According to reporting from The Athletic, such a move wouldn’t be finalised before the domestic transfer deadline on Tuesday, September 1. Arsenal reportedly intend to keep him embedded with the first team through at least the first half of the season before revisiting the decision in January.
Salmon spoke positively about the experience of training alongside senior players, noting how much he’s absorbed not just tactically, but in observing their habits and professionalism away from the pitch. He described the exposure as valuable and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from teammates up close.
