Construction of the new U.S. Consulate General in Lagos has reached a major milestone, with the final bucket of structural concrete poured onto the roof of the 10-storey Chancery building.
The topping-off ceremony was held on October 6, 2026, at the new consulate compound in Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, with U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for West Africa and Public Diplomacy Richard Michaels overseeing the ceremonial final pour. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and U.S. Consul General Brandon Hudspeth were also among those present.
According to the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, the milestone reflects four years of work and collaboration between American and Nigerian professionals. The project currently involves 120 Nigerian engineers, architects and administrators working alongside 43 American construction professionals. More than 1,500 Nigerian workers have also received training through the project.
The U.S. Mission described the new compound as a lasting symbol of the relationship between the United States and Nigeria and their growing commercial partnership. Michaels said the facility was being built to U.S. standards for design and construction and would support the next phase of bilateral engagement.
The project, located on a 12.2-acre (4.94-hectare) site, includes the 10-storey Chancery, multipurpose facilities and a new American Center. The U.S. Department of State currently lists the project’s budget at $611 million and its estimated completion date as 2028.
The new Consulate General was designed by Ennead Architects, with Pernix International serving as the design/build contractor. The project is also expected to contribute more than $95 million to the local economy through employees, subcontractors and suppliers.
The topping-off ceremony marks completion of the building’s main structural framework, although further construction and fit-out work remain before the facility is completed and opened.
