Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Lukman Sanni, on suspicion of carrying illegal firearms. Officers stopped and searched him at Iyana Isashi, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the command’s spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi.
Police say the search turned up a locally made pistol, two live cartridges and a suspected charm. The command described the arrest as part of its wider effort to curb illegal possession and trafficking of firearms, along with other crime in the state.
Preliminary investigations are under way to establish how Sanni came to have the weapon and ammunition, and who they were meant for. The statement said he is in custody and is helping detectives with their enquiries.
Police Commissioner Tijani Fatai repeated the command’s commitment to tackling illegal firearms, arms trafficking, cultism and other crime. He asked residents to stay alert and report anything suspicious, saying public cooperation is key to keeping the peace.
The command gave these numbers for reporting suspicious activity and emergencies: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870 and 09168630929. A separate line, 08080193432, is for the Marine unit.
