Wrexham’s Premier League dream has been delayed by at least another season after a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough on the final day left them outside the Championship play-off places, with Hull City taking the last available spot.
The Welsh club went into the game sixth, level on goal difference with Hull, knowing a win by the same margin as the Tigers would be enough to secure a semi-final place. What followed was 95 minutes of swings and drama, with Wrexham, Hull and Derby County all moving in and out of the top six at various points. Wrexham occupied sixth place for just seven minutes of the afternoon.
It was a difficult afternoon from the start. Goalkeeper Danny Ward spilled a cross to gift Middlesbrough striker Tommy Conway an early goal, but Wrexham responded with a stunning Josh Windass free-kick from 30 yards to level. They then took the lead when Issa Kabore’s cross was headed home by Sam Smith — only for David Strelec to equalise for Boro less than two minutes later, turning in Matt Targett’s cross with Wrexham’s defence caught flat.
Wrexham threw everything forward in the closing stages, even sending Ward up for a late corner, but could not find the goal they needed. Hull held on elsewhere, and Wrexham’s season was over.
Captain Dom Hyam acknowledged the pain while urging perspective. “We’ve worked ten months for today and if we’d have got one more goal we might have been in the play-offs,” he said. “It’s tough to take but the club has gone back-to-back-to-back and it’s not a failure today, it’s really not.”
It is the first time since 2022 that Wrexham have ended a season without promotion. Manager Phil Parkinson acknowledged the defeat stings, though less so than the 5-4 play-off loss to Grimsby that ended their run three years ago.
Middlesbrough, meanwhile, go into the play-offs with optimism. Boss Kim Hellberg said his side would face Southampton with confidence, noting that a 25% chance of reaching the Premier League was a significant opportunity they intended to take.
