Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has said the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will stay with President Bola Tinubu as he seeks a second term in 2027.
Soludo made the declaration on Wednesday in Abuja at the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council. He said the party was backing the president because Tinubu stands for national unity, security and shared prosperity.
“We believe in the unity of Nigeria… the security of Nigeria… the shared prosperity of Nigeria,” he said, adding that Tinubu represents those three pillars.
‘Unprecedented consensus’
The governor said he knew of no earlier point in Nigeria’s history when there had been a stronger political and elite consensus behind a sitting president. He noted that about 33 governors were present at the event.
He also argued that APGA belongs within Nigeria’s progressive political movement. The party was registered in 2002, he said, 12 years before the APC was formed. “If you count progressives and you don’t count APGA, it is not complete,” he said.
Support for the reforms
Soludo described Tinubu’s economic reforms as difficult but necessary, and said this was one reason APGA was supporting him. He told the president that the path he had chosen took courage.
He urged progressives across the country to unite behind Tinubu and described the re-election bid as a chance to advance a shared vision for Nigeria.
The governor said he expected a second Tinubu administration to speed up the country’s transformation, moving it from stability and reform towards shared prosperity. He called this the “acceleration phase” towards what he termed “pragmatic progressivism”, an approach he said should be entrenched in Nigeria.
“Why change a winning team?” he asked. “If it is not broken, why fix it?”
Soludo closed by pledging APGA’s support to Tinubu both in the campaign and in government. “We are a partner in this journey back to Aso Rock,” he said, “and we will remain your partner in the governance process.”
