PDP’s Bawa Rallies Southern Kaduna Support Ahead of 2027 Governorship Race

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kaduna State, Shehu Usman Bawa, has appealed to residents of Southern Kaduna to back the party’s bid to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 governorship election.

Bawa made the appeal on Friday in Kafanchan while addressing PDP supporters and stakeholders from the Southern Kaduna Senatorial District, also known as Zone 3. The gathering brought together party leaders, members and other stakeholders from across the senatorial district, giving Bawa and his running mate, Hon. Amos Adamu Gandu, the chance to engage directly with party members and hear their concerns ahead of the election.

The PDP candidate urged political aspirants and office seekers to avoid making promises they would be unable to keep if elected, stressing that effective political leadership should rest on accountability, transparency and responsibility. Bawa, a former federal lawmaker, pledged that his administration would adopt a bottom-to-top approach to governance if elected, with closer attention paid to the needs and aspirations of grassroots communities.

He called on residents across Kaduna State to support what he described as an effort to “rescue Kaduna” from what he characterised as poor leadership under the APC administration, saying a PDP government would prioritise policies and programmes addressing the needs of ordinary citizens, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Speaking at the event, Kaduna State PDP Chairman, Chief Edward Percy Masha, said the meeting was organised to give the party’s governorship candidate and his running mate a platform to interact with stakeholders in Southern Kaduna and better understand issues affecting the area. Masha said the PDP was ready to contest the APC for control of Kaduna State and urged party members to stay united as the 2027 elections approach.

He also criticised the current administration over what he described as worsening economic hardship among residents, saying the PDP would continue to highlight what it considers the government’s shortcomings. Masha further alleged that the Kaduna State Government had failed to honour a pre-2023 election promise concerning the payment of entitlements to disengaged traditional leaders, district heads and teachers.

Earlier at the event, PDP Zonal Chairman, Hon. Yusuf Danjuma Akuso, described Bawa as a “fine gentleman” and expressed confidence in his candidacy, urging supporters in the zone to remain committed to the party. The immediate past PDP chairman in the state, Hassan Hyat, also alleged that some residents had been excluded from government programmes and benefits, contrasting this with what he said had occurred under previous PDP administrations.
