Slavia Prague forward Mubarak Suleiman has become the first Nigerian teenager to start a UEFA Champions League match since Alex Iwobi in March 2016, according to Opta Joe.
The 19-year-old started in Slavia’s 2-2 draw away to Fenerbahce at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on Tuesday night. He made two key passes and completed six accurate passes into the final third before Pavel Kacor replaced him with five minutes left. Suleiman has one goal and one assist in eight appearances for the club across all competitions this season.
Slavia came from two goals down to earn a point. Oguz Aydin and Mason Greenwood put Fenerbahce 2-0 up inside the opening 11 minutes. Lukas Provod pulled one back in the 15th minute after Matteo Guendouzi misplaced a pass, and Kacor levelled with an acrobatic volley in the 90th minute. It was Kacor’s first senior goal for Slavia, and it came from a cross by Nigerian teammate Emmanuel Ayaosi.
Suleiman had been expected to feature for the Super Eagles in their friendly against Russia but withdrew from the squad. He will now look to build on his progress at Slavia as he seeks another chance with the national team.
