Iheanacho Celebrates Record Run in Turkey With New “Agabey” Nickname

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has reacted on social media after making history in Turkey, sharing a photo of himself in traditional Turkish dress along with a new nickname, “Agabey.”

He posted the picture on Instagram after scoring twice and setting up another goal as Bursaspor beat Muglaspor 3-0 in the Turkish 1. Lig on Thursday. His caption read, “We go ball till eternity, Kelechi Agabey.” The word is a respectful Turkish title that translates roughly as “Big Brother” or “Boss.”

A record run

The 30-year-old has now scored in 10 consecutive league matches, which the report says makes him the first player to do so in Turkish professional league football. He has found the net in all 10 games he has played for Bursaspor, and counting his appearance for the Super Eagles, he has scored in 11 straight matches. Since joining from Celtic, he has scored 14 goals and three assists.

How the match unfolded

The former Manchester City and Leicester City striker appeared to open the scoring in the 51st minute, but a VAR review ruled the goal out for offside. He did not have to wait long to make amends, putting Bursaspor 1-0 up seven minutes later. He completed his brace in the 79th minute, then set up substitute Hüseyin Maldar for the third goal four minutes after that.

Promotion race

The result lifts Bursaspor to second in the Turkish 1. Lig with 22 points, two clear of third-placed Iğdır FK and three behind leaders Kayserispor. Second place is one of the two automatic promotion spots to the Turkish Super Lig. Bursaspor hosts Pendikspor on Monday.
