Vieira Unveiled as Senegal Coach: ‘A Homecoming’

Patrick Vieira has been presented as Senegal’s new head coach, describing the appointment as “an absolute dream” and a return to his roots.

The 50-year-old was born in Senegal but played for France, winning the 1998 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship. The former Arsenal midfielder was unveiled at a news conference in Dakar on Friday. It is his first international job after spells with New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa.

Vieira said he accepted the challenge from his first meetings with the president of the Senegalese football federation, partly because of the quality of the current group of players. He said he understands the expectations of Senegal’s 20 million people and is confident his experience and determination will carry the project through.

Inheritance

Vieira replaces the sacked Pape Thiaw. Senegal went out of the 2026 World Cup in the last 32, losing 3-2 to Belgium after extra time having led 2-0 after 85 minutes.

The team won the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in January, beating Morocco 1-0 after extra time. However, some Senegal players and staff walked off in protest at a penalty decision in the final, and the trophy was handed to hosts Morocco in March. The Court of Arbitration for Sport will decide who keeps it.

Approach

Vieira said Senegal now ranks among the major nations in world football and that expectations have risen accordingly. He wants a side with “a very precise structure” that plays with intensity and aggression.

He ruled out a rebuild from scratch, saying he intends to respect the federation’s work in recent years and preserve the team’s identity, unity and resilience. He asked for the whole nation’s support and promised to work to restore the team’s pride.

Fixtures

Vieira faces competitive action straight away in qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with two games in this international window, two in November and the last two in March 2027.

His first match was due to be a home game against Mozambique on Friday, September 25, but the fixture has been reversed and will now be played in Maputo because Dakar is preparing to host the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Vieira said he would have preferred to start at home but that he and the federation agreed postponing was the best option. Senegal then travel to Ethiopia on September 29.
