Nigeria’s police have rescued Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, younger sister of former Minister of Power Chief Adebayo Adelabu, along with her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, following a late-night operation in Oyo State on Saturday.
The family had been abducted on the morning of Wednesday, June 3, around 7:30 a.m., while travelling to the boys’ school. Officers from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) moved in that evening, with the rescue completed by approximately 7:30 p.m. Two suspected kidnappers were killed in a gunfight during the operation, and firearms were recovered at the scene.
“Sustained intelligence tracking and tactical pressure forced the kidnappers into a confrontation with operatives, leading to the successful rescue of the victims,” police sources said. Security personnel are continuing to search surrounding areas for additional members of the kidnapping syndicate, some of whom are believed to have fled with gunshot wounds.
The swift resolution of the case has drawn sharp public comment, coming against the backdrop of a far more protracted crisis elsewhere in the state. More than 30 schoolchildren and teachers abducted in mid-May raids in Oriire Local Government Area remain in captivity. The Oriire abductors killed one teacher and beheaded another in a video circulated online, and are demanding a large ransom as well as the enforcement of Sharia law.
The contrast has fuelled criticism on social media, with users questioning why connected families appear to receive faster intervention while the Oriire victims perceived to be ordinary schoolchildren and their teachers have spent weeks in captivity without resolution.
