A Federal Government committee investigating the deaths of 37 people in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State has concluded that they died from asphyxiation.
The committee’s chairman, Jonathan Kure, a former Deputy Director-General of the Department of State Services, announced the finding in Abuja on Tuesday. He was handing the panel’s report to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
The deaths occurred on 17 September 2026 at the NSCDC Niger State Command in Minna. Those who died were suspected illegal miners, among dozens picked up during operations in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas of the state.
This is a developing story and more details will follow.
