FIFA, CAF to name panel to run Nigerian football until 2027 elections

FIFA has signed off on a normalisation committee to run the Nigeria Football Federation until May 2027. In a letter sent to the NFF’s interim leadership on Thursday, it said it would appoint the members together with CAF as soon as possible. The committee’s mandate ends once its tasks are complete, and no later than 31 May 2027.

The NFF is expected to hold fresh elections before then, and nobody on the committee will be allowed to stand for any of the posts. Until the members are named, acting general secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme will keep running the federation’s affairs.

The decision follows the departure of most of the NFF’s executives in August. President Ibrahim Gusau and general secretary Mohammed Sanusi both resigned after pressure over poor results from various national teams. FIFA officials came to Nigeria in September to confirm the government hadn’t interfered. Soon after the resignations, President Bola Tinubu ordered a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football, saying the country had repeatedly failed to qualify for major regional, continental and world tournaments.
