The attack reportedly began at about 2 a.m. and left the station badly damaged. A police Hilux van and other vehicles were also burnt.

What a source says

A source familiar with the incident said the attackers appeared to be after the police armoury but found it empty. They reportedly made off with some police uniforms. The source also claimed that one of the gunmen was shot dead, but his associates carried the body away.

Police response

Abia State Police Commissioner Wilfred Afolabi confirmed the deaths of two officers and injuries to three people, including a civilian, while inspecting the scene on Saturday with Governor Alex Otti. He said the injured were being treated at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital in Aba.

“The hoodlums came. Some of the shelters above were set ablaze,” he said.

Afolabi said he reached the scene at about 4 a.m. and that the priority was to identify and arrest those responsible. “For now, we have not made any arrests, but we are working on that,” he said. He assured residents that police would pursue the attackers and bring them to justice.

Governor Otti later visited the injured at the hospital.
