President Bola Tinubu has voiced deep sorrow over Monday’s crash of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft near a naval base in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State. The aircraft went down while on a routine flight from Benin to Lagos.
The President offered his condolences to the families of the 25 passengers and seven crew members aboard, as well as to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, and the wider ranks of the Nigerian Air Force.
Tinubu described the crash as a painful moment for both the Armed Forces and the nation, noting that Air Force personnel risk their lives daily to keep the country secure and that their sacrifice would not be forgotten. He said the Chief of Air Staff had briefed him on the incident and that he had instructed the Air Force to launch a full investigation into its cause in order to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The President commended the Air Force for swiftly launching a search-and-rescue operation after the crash, and offered prayers for the souls of the personnel lost and for strength for their families and the Air Force as they come to terms with the loss. He reaffirmed his administration’s continued support for the Air Force in its role safeguarding the nation, and also praised the quick response of first responders and the Ondo State Government at the crash site.
