Sanwo-Olu Promises Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge Will Open Before Christmas

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says the Opebi-Ojota link bridge will be ready for use before Christmas, after delays pushed its completion past the September target he had earlier given.

He gave the assurance on Sunday during an inspection visit to the construction site to find out why the project had slipped.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that he had earlier projected an end-of-September completion.

“This bridge was completed earlier in the year, and at one of the media gatherings, I did mention, based on the work plan that I was told, that it would be ready for use by the end of September. This is the end of October, and we haven’t completed it. So, as a responsible governor, I have to come and find out: what is the delay?” he said.

The governor said the bridge’s distinctive design draws on the area’s historical cane market and is meant to preserve the community’s cultural identity. The steel structures are designed to mimic the weaving of cane, with four interwoven elements.

He described the engineering as complex, noting that more than 300 tonnes of steel are being installed at heights of up to 25 metres. Three of the four structural components are complete, he said, and work on the fourth is due to start shortly.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the project is about 80 per cent complete, and he expressed confidence that the remaining structural work will be finished within a few days.

He added that an LED screen will be installed and lit in Lagos State’s colours, to enhance the bridge’s appearance and make it a landmark project. The design, he said, is meant to reflect the history and identity of Lagos while adding to its infrastructure.
