Suspect

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a principal suspect in the alleged murder of a 61-year-old retired teacher in Abeokuta, nearly eight months after her death.

The suspect, named Alhaji Saburi Lateef Ayinde, popularly called “Oki-Ocean,” was arrested on 19 October 2026 following investigations. Police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi announced the arrest in a statement issued in Abeokuta. Ayinde has not been tried or convicted, and the allegations below are the police’s account.

What police say happened

The woman was allegedly killed at her home in Agbaakin Emere, Bode-Olude, Abeokuta, on 27 February 2026, and her body was found in the toilet of her residence the following day. According to Babaseyi, she had returned shortly before from a retirement celebration organised by her colleagues.

Police say the suspect attacked her with a cutlass and then strangled her during an altercation.

The alleged motive

Babaseyi said Ayinde confessed to the killing and told police that he had financial dealings with the teacher. According to the police account, he had left ₦3.45 million with her for safekeeping, and they had agreed that she would lend him ₦1.5 million to buy another vehicle.

Detectives are working to corroborate his account and establish the full circumstances of the killing, the spokesperson said.

Police response

Ogun State Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni praised the investigators for their persistence and professionalism, and reiterated the command’s commitment to investigating serious crimes and prosecuting suspects lawfully. He said the suspect would be charged in court once the investigation is complete, and urged residents to settle disputes lawfully and report crimes to the police.
